Famous Malaysians
Malaysia has produced plenty of famous and influential people over the years. The list is pretty much endless, but here are a few of the most well-known faces.
Dato' Michelle Yeoh
You probably know Dato' Michell Yeoh from her appearances in such famous hit movies as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tomorrow Never Dies, The Mummy 3 and Memoirs of a Geisha. She began her storied career back in 1992 when she starred opposite Jackie Chan in his Hong Kong kung-fu comedy Police Story 3. Well known for being able to play action, comedy, drama and romantic roles, she is a true mould-breaker of both Asian and international cinema.
Amber Chia
Amber Chia is one of Asia's most famous supermodels of all time. Since she first made her mark at the age of 17 by winning the Guess Watches Timeless Beauty Contest in 2004, she has gone from strength to strength. She was the Malaysian model of the year in both 2004 and 2005, plus became the L'Oreal and Sony ambassador.
Dato' Jimmy Choo
Few names ring quite so sweetly across the world of fashion as that of Jimmy Choo. His high quality, ultra sophisticated footwear is worn by celebrities, socialites and beautiful people in every corner of the globe. Since the age of 11 he has been making his own shoes and he opened his first shoe shop in London back in 1986. He quickly gained widespread media attention for the quality and style of his shoes, particularly after Vogue devoted a record eight pages to his collection. Amongst his most famous clients are Jay Z and the late Princess Diana.
Nicol David
Squash is a very popular sport in Malaysia, so it is no surprise that one of the most recognised squash players in the world is Malaysian. Nicol David is ranked no. 1 in the world, having bagged a record six World Championships between 2005 and 2011. What's more, she was the first Asian woman to take the title. At the 2004 Olympics she carried the Malaysian torch to Athens. There are few women in Asia that have the extraordinary dominance in their own sporting field as David.
